šŸµļø When Your Members Go Quiet...

The crickets after the new member welcome. I feel ya.

Can I name the thing you’re potentially feeling?

You did the hard part.

You got people into your community šŸ‘

You welcomed the new members.

But then... silence šŸ¦—

Members join. They post their intro. Come to an event. Then it's crickets.

Ugh.

Can you relate?

Sustaining community engagement is the no. 1 challenge I read about. In over 640+ cohort applications, over 210 of them mention dealing with members who go quiet.

  • How do I keep my community going?

  • How do I deal with members who've gone MIA?

  • How do I reduce drop-off right after someone joins?

  • How do I ensure it's not only me posting in Slack? 😭 omg this one hits home

  • How do I turn the passive members into active contributors?!

I get it.

I read this all the time. Same sentence, different words: "I can get people into our community, but how do I get them to stay active?"

I’m right in this with you, managing 2 existing communities myself.

So hear me out.

This is not a you problem.

This is a community design problem.

yayyyy phewph

But let’s make sure we actually address the problem šŸ˜†

First, let me take you back to 2021. Lockdown. Melbourne. We ran a meetup for 17 community builders at The Commons to support each other with our challenges.

That’s how The Community Collective started.

The CC’s first meetup in 2021

I had no idea what I was doing.

But consistently showing up for 5+ years, listening to our members, understanding their frustrations and constantly asking how we could help them, has taught me something remarkable.

It’s not how you engage people. It’s how you design the community container to get the right people in the room to support one another on a regular basis.

That’s community.

And that’s the engagement strategy that’s helped build The CC to a 21.2k audience, 700+ community with 12 Ambassadors across 18 countries (!!) 🤯

Community vibes

Opening a Slack and posting the link on socials for anyone to join is easy.

But ensuring all those people gain value and don’t drop off a cliff instantly? That’s the hard part.

And that’s exactly what we help you solve in our Community Cohort.

It’s literally the 8-week container we co-created with people like yourself to help us all crawl out of the pit of engagement despair. My god I’ve been there.

8 weeks, going deep on exactly this.

How to turn lurkers into contributors. How to make members help each other instead of asking you 10000 questions in the DMs. How to build momentum that holds when you stop posting. How to design a community that gets the right people in the room with Ambassadors who co-build it WITH you. Not for you…

You don't need another ā€œhow toā€ video. This is not that.

You need a room. A supportive container connecting you with the right people.

This is what we’ve done for the last 5 years. Training community builders at Google, Notion, Canva, TEDx, the founders running their own communities and everyone in between how to build an impactful community.

And trust me.

Experiencing first hand how we’ve built community IS the learning.

You’ll learn more in the first 5-days of joining a community for community builders than any recording could teach you.

It’s pretty wild 🤪

Okkkkkkkk that’s me and my rant now done!

Thanks for reading. Did you make it to the end? I’m impressed šŸ˜Ž

Or maybe you want to speak to a real human?!

They literally are offering 30min community chats for you to understand more about our cohort. How lovely is that?! Bless them.

Alrighty that’s it from me friends!

Now I’m off to the local Community Garden to get some fresh veggies for the week. I’ve just spent a couple weeks down the coast on a break and it’s been divine. Also bought a new puppy which is SO exciting. Picking her up on 11 July so stay tuned… 🄹🐶

See you in Cohort #9,

Paz and The CC Team

And here’s a message from our friends at Beehiiv - our fave newsletter platform 🧔

You’re gonna want to see this live

On July 16th at 1PM ET, beehiiv is unveiling the next chapter for audience-led businesses.

For years, creators and brands have been forced to stitch together bloated stacks of tools just to publish content, grow an audience, and make money online.

Newsletters in one platform. Websites in another. Podcasts somewhere else. Analytics scattered everywhere.

beehiiv thinks there’s a better way. Now, they’re ready to show it off at their Summer Release Event.
